For us a tractor is must have. So many of the chores done around the farm are either easier with a tractor or almost impossible with out one. We decided to go with a Kubota L3901 HST, purchased new in April of 2020. Along with the tractor we purchased a mounder, rotary cutter and disc harrow. We have since added pallet forks, a box blade, tiller, auger, ripper, quick hitch, canopy and utility carry all box which I made. I'm pretty sure we use each of these implements every season.

The 3901 is a great choice.  It's small enough to get in and out of our barn and around the 20 acres quite easily but has enough capacity to move, pull, lift almost everything that we've asked of it.  A couple cons to the HST version of the 3901, the hydraulic pump whines really loudly, headphones are a must if you are going to be in the seat for a while.  Also because it's an emissions tractor you have to run the diesel engine at high rpm's at all times or deal with regen (emissions burn off) quite often. Finally, my biggest con... the size of the rotary cutter. With only 32hp to the PTO a 60" cutter is about all you can use.  Cutting 20 acres 5' at a time makes for a long day.  Luckily we are planting more and more lavender which means less grass to cut. Until next time, Chap out.
